There are two main options for students with special needs to receive funding to attend a private school. The level of scholarship funding is subject to change each year. These amounts are set annually by the Florida state government. We typically receive notice of the updated funding amounts in July of each year.

  1. McKay Scholarship

    • You can file for intent annually and it does not jeopardize your child’s standings in the public school if you decide not to use it.

    • It is important to ensure that your child’s IEP is accurate prior to withdrawal from the public school system. Your child’s IEP needs to reflect all of the needs and services he/she requires in order to maximize the amount of funding he/she is eligible to receive. Once your child begins to attend a private school, the matrix rating cannot be increased. The only way for the IEP to be changed and the matrix rating to be increased is for your child to reenroll in public school for a full year.

  2. Gardiner Scholarship Program

    • The Gardiner Scholarship Program (previously named The Personal Learning Scholarship Account (PLSA)) is a newly created program administered by state-approved nonprofit Scholarship Funding Organizations (SFOs) that is designed to provide the option for a parent to better meet the individual educational needs of his or her eligible child.

    • The Gardiner Scholarship provides eligible students a scholarship that can be used to purchase approved services or products. To participate, parents must apply to one of the non-profit scholarship funding organizations that are administering the program.
